Who the heck is he?

Irie Shoichi is an important character, although from first the glance he may not seem like much. He's not a member of Tsuna's family or even an official member of the Vongola Family, in general. Instead Shoichi is a normal boy whose gets involved with Tsuna and his family while still in grade school. In Chapter 13 of the manga, Shoichi and his family received a package after Lambo came crashing through the wall of their home. Inside the package was a 10-Year-Bazooka, which allowed Shoichi to travel to the future.

 

When Shoichi traveled to the future he encountered his life, should he continue with his schooling in the same manner that he was at that time. Shoichi's real love however, is music and after seeing himself in college, he is so intimidated that he chose to change his plans. This led him to travel again, and check in on his future after making a few changes. He finds himself in some slummy basement. Once again he runs scared but, his traveling through different events gives Byakuran the chance to awaken his power and travel between the worlds.

 

Or course, when we first meet Shoichi we really don't know any of this. We first meet him leading the Melone Base of the Millefiore Family, as one of Byakuran's funeral wreaths. He is trying to stop Tsuna and his family from reaching the base, and is doing everything he can to take them down...

 

...or is he?

 

As it turns out he was a spy who got close to Byakuran in order to take him down. It was all part of a plan that he created with the Tsuna and Hibari from the future. As it turns out Byakuran wants to control not just the world we see as the canon but every alternate reality, he can travel through the worlds easily and Shoichi blames himself because without meeting him, he thinks Byakuran wouldn't have become aware of his alternate selves.

 

Shoichi begins to work alongside Tsuna and the others as an engineer in order to help them fight off Byakuran and save the world. It's strange how one simple event can change someone's whole life.
