As a Tragic HeroHizumi’s personality makes him nearly incomprehensible as a character however there is a strong base for why he made the choices that led to his downfall. Hizumi first attends college in America at the age of thirteen because like most kids he wanted to be a hero. When Hizumi was ten he was told of his past which made him believe he could defy fate and save the blade children. He wanted to save them and make up for his brother’s mistakes; he also believed it would make him a hero to them.
Hizumi studied hard and used his resources from Kiyotaka and the watchers to attempt to find a way to permanently turn off the mental switch which would change them from prodigies to cold blooded killers. Hizumi realized as he got further in to the genetics that he may be unable to save the blade children because his own fate would kill him before he had the chance. This discourages Hizumi because he realizes that Kiyotaka planned this in order to give him a feeling of hopelessness. Hizumi falls and quickly once realizes he was disillusioned into thinking he could be a hero.
These facts lead Hizumi to fit a tragic hero archetype despite the fact that he is not the protagonist. According to Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero the character must be born of noble blood of some sort, the character must have a hamartia which is defined as a tragic flaw that eventually leads to his downfall, a perpeteia which is a reversal of fortune caused by his flaw, his actions must increase self awareness, and the character must invoke pity and/or fear from the audience.
Hizumi fits all of these characteristics. He was born from genius, which in modern times may make him the equivalent of a noble, in other words “one of higher birth”. Hizumi also has a tragic flaw, his naivety and simple belief that he could possibly change fate without prior knowledge. During Hizumi’s time at college he believed he could become a hero however his misfortune is due to his realization about the world he was born into. Hizumi becomes aware of his flaws through his own experiences as well as Ayumu explaining where he went wrong. Hizumi’s invocation of pity or fear is something that is clearly on a personal basis.
