The Melody of Logic...

Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna is a fairly lesser known series that was written by Kyo Shirodaira and made with art by Eita Mizuno. It was originally a mystery manga that eventually became an anime series. The anime is incomplete as production stopped at episode 25 of a 50+ episode series. This is rumored to be because of a car accident in which the producers of the anime were killed however there is no confirmation on whether or not this is true. The manga however is complete as of 2005. It spans 15 volumes and ran in Monthly Shonen GanGan from 2001 until it's ending in 2005. The anime has been dubbed by FUNimation quite a few years ago and the manga is scheduled for a United States release under a company by the name of Yen Press.

Spiral revolves around the young protagonist Ayumu Narumi as he tries to figure out the Mystery of the Blade Children, a mystery so big it caused his genius older brother to disappear just two years earlier. Ayumu ends up in a heated battle first against the blade children then against those who are trying to kill the blade children in order to save them from their fate.

In my opinion Spiral's plot is pretty good and unique the plot twists are just so,so in the beginning before they become interesting near the plot's climax. The manga has a much better plot then the anime due to the anime's production being cut off and their split second ending. The art in Spiral is beautiful, like most series I perfer the manga art to the anime art but both are awesome. The charaters are well developed and it has great moral type things, including, the power to believe in one's self and the ability to change fate.

His Inner Thoughts

Ayumu has an inferiority complex because he feels he could never as good as his brother because his brother excelled in all things and Ayumu felt that his "skills" weren't quite as good as his brother. This causes him a lot of emotional and mental turmoil as he continues on throughout Spiral: ~Suiri no Kizuna~.

Ayumu is cocky at first and is known as "cool guy" or a "loner". He avoids everyone and doesn't care about school because it's way to easy. With the blade children Ayumu is challenged and that is unusual to him and troubles him at times. In the end he often wants to give up because they bring out the inferiority that Ayumu feels from his brother.

As the series goes on and Ayumu overcomes all of the Blade Children's trials he gains confidence but still feels human he doesn't think that he has any special power or ability even though the blade children swear he does. He doesn't believe he can change "fate" and even has doubts about the existence of such a thing but he does want to fight back against his brother.

Ayumu's biggest thing is to fight for what he believes in and prove to both himself, those relying on him, and his brother that he wasn't the weak boy who lost confidence as he was stuck in the shadow of his brother for years. In the end he is able to reach his goals, it just takes a long journey to learn to believe in himself and what he can achive.

His Dashing Looks

Spiral is known for having a fairly normal group of hairstyles (With Hizumi being the only MAJOR offender). Ayumu isn't too odd. Ayumu has slightly spiky hair with bangs thzt stop right before his eye level. He also has a piece of hair that is constantly parted to the left side of his face. Finally he also has sideburns. As the series goes on they get longer and well, odder. His hair is brown though.

Ayumu has "normal pupils" which is a rare sight in Spiral because the blade children have "cat eyes" where their pupils appear more like slits than circles. Considering the amount of blade children that make up the major characters, Ayumu's eyes stand out. His eyes are a hazel and appear anywhere from a chocolate brown to a dull bronze depending on the image.

Most of the Spiral characters have an outfit that they always wear. Ayumu is in school for like 3/4 of the series so his unbuttoned classic blue school uniform with wite undershirt is most common. Other than that he likes wearing long sleeved heavy coats. He also is seen with his earrings in thoughout the whole series so, those are an important piece of his outfit. At least he doesn't have any clothes that the fandom would like nothing more than to burn (i.e. Hizumi's hat, some of the outfits Kousuke wears, Eyes' clothes, the third is for an entirely different reason).

Translations and Kabalarians

Aymu's name is made up of the characters 鳴海歩. In the (surname, given name) format. The first character 鳴 roughly is translated to "ringing" in the English language, The second character 海 is "ocean" or "sea" in english, and the final character 歩 is "step". Or, something along those lines.

So, in order to make sense of this knowledge I assume they mean "ringing" in the sense of "melody" or "music" or even "calling". Then the second is clear, to me. Finally "step" seems to me to mean "rising" or "stepping up". So, through it all, I think Ayumu's name means the "rising melody of the sea" or something like that. It's super confusing.

Kabalarians are a method of finding out one's personality based on their first name. Here are the results for Ayumu. Your first name of Ayumu has given you a clever, deep mind and the talent to excel in highly inspirational lines of endeavour as a dramatist, musician, writer, or artist. You can be lifted by beauty in all forms and you are at the most creative when inspired. Your expressive, affectionate nature responds very quickly through your feelings, but you must guard against being possessive and jealous. You feel and sense much that you do not fully understand and cannot express. Your delight in mystery could draw you into occult studies or religions.

Family Life

Ayumu was raised from at least the age of five by Kiyotaka Narumi, his older brother who was 20 at the time. I figure this because that would be right around to right after Kiyotaka killed Yaiba. (timeline says that Kiyotaka estranged himself from his family at 19 in order to persue Yaiba, killed Yaiba at the age of twenty and by the age of 21 was already raising Ayumu). It is assumed that because Ayumu's existence was either not accepted or even completely unknown from his parents (due to the fact that biologically Ayumu and Kiyotaka's DNA makes them clones or identical twins). As such the brothers who were so far apart in age and who lived not as siblings but almost more as parent and child they grew apart and Ayumu being brilliant like Kiyotaka felt that he could not complete things that Kiyotaka hadn't already done.

Then there is Madoka, Ayumu's Sister-In-Law who raised Ayumu for two years prior to the beginning of Spiral. She was Ayumu's first crush and Kiyotaka's wife. She treats Ayumu as if they've known eachother for years and is really more of a family figure than anyone else in Ayumu's life. Ayumu loves her as a sister but finds it hard to forget his crush on her. He also feels the need to protect her for Kiyotaka while she feels that she has to do the protecting.

As I said Ayumu's parents don't recognize Ayumu's existence. Which is really quite sad. Madoka says that it's a "screwed up family relations". Ayumu seems completely unfazed by his parents neglect however his competetive nature against Kiyotaka suggests otherwise. Implying that perhaps he tried to gain recognition as a child but moved on when Madoka moved in.

The Blade Children

Ayumu is told that it is his destiny to save the Blade Children and as such he is able to form a unique relation with all of them through their fights and experiences. He meets them all and they stay friends even through the epilogue of the series.

With Eyes Rutherford (probably the most mature) Ayumu feels as if they are similar, and he slightly resents that Eyes fights along with the other blade children but will come to their rescue. Eyes explains most things later in the series to Ayumu and believes that without a doubt Ayumu has the absolute power to save them.

Kousuke is a year or so older then Ayumu as is a cocky ass to Ayumu. He's always trying to show his superiority and strength but in all he depends on Ayumu and is slightly insecure about a lot of things. He's outgoing and not quite sure he can be saved but is certainly willing to try and survive.

Rio looks like the youngest but she's not young at all. She believes in herself and wants to encourage Ayumu and bring him up but won't waste her time about it. She challenges him with full force. More than anything she feels almost a sense of worship towards Ayumu.

Ryoko think little of her fate as a Blade Children but will stay beside Kousuke and keep him under control, she's very mothering towards Ayumu and hopes he can be the key to allowing Kouske and herself to stay by eachothers sides.

Kanone doesn't believe in Ayumu and feels fate can't be changed and nearly destroys Ayumu in his death he realizes that Ayumu is their savior and is greatful for the time he was able to spend fighting against Ayumu. He wants the best for Eyes and the others more than anything else.

Hizumi & Hiyono

I personally think that Ayumu is a glutton for punishment, or at least annoying people. He hates happy-go-lucky, practically obnoxious people. Yet those seem to be the ones who were always closest to Ayumu. Namely Hiyono and Hizumi.

Hiyono is his self-proclaimed sidekick. She is the school's reporter who follows Ayumu because she is "interested" in him (in all actuality she was hired by Kiyotaka). No matter how useful she can be to Ayumu when they're not on a mystery she will do her best to piss Ayumu off... in attempts to cheer him up or get reactions out of him. Ayumu always claims that he hates her but all in all they're best friends. They never are canonly together and at one point Ayumu says that Hiyono would "never be his kind of girl". Still they stay close when Hiyono is in the country in the post series. (Sorry, Hiyono may be more important but Hizumi is my favorite.)

Hizumi is Ayumu's destined rival. They are meant to kill eachother. However they instead become friends (partially forced by Hizumi). They hang out together for a while, though it started as a forced relationship, but then work together... At least at school. They even end up taking on the whole boys Basketball Team. In the end they do have to fight eachother. Ayumu doesn't kill Hizumi even when he has every right to, he instead lets Hizumi live on. Hizumi in return finds a way for Ayumu to live through the DNA illness that plagues them both even when he knows he will die for doing so. Hizumi is okay with that. That's what makes them close because even though they didn't know eachother for a long time, they still became friends against all odds. They are super, super obnoxious throughout his arc. Also "Kiyotaka told me to" is never an excuse.
